Photographer's Note
São Jorge Castle (Portuguese: Castelo de São Jorge) is a Moorish castle occupying a commanding hilltop overlooking the historic centre of the Portuguese city of Lisbon and Tagus River. The strongly fortified citadel dates from medieval period of Portuguese history, and is one of the main tourist sites of Lisbon.
The hill was first used by indigenous Celtic tribes, then by Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians as a defensible outpost that was later expropriated by Roman, Suebic, Visigothic, and Moorish peoples. During the 10th century, the fortifications were rebuilt by Muslim Berber forces, these included the walls or Cerca Moura ("Moorish Encirclement")
In the context of the Christian Reconquista, the castle and the city of Lisbon were freed from Moorish rule in 1147 by Afonso Henriques and northern European knights in the Siege of Lisbon during the Second Crusade; this victory was the only notable success of that failed crusade. With the taking of the castle Christian forces were able to maintain the defence of Lisbon until the end of the 12th century.
When Lisbon became the capital of the kingdom in 1255, the castle served as the alcáçova, a fortified residence for Afonso III, in his role as governor. It was extensively renovated around 1300 by King Denis I, transforming the Moorish alcáçova into the Royal Palace of the Alcáçova.
Between 1373 and 1375, King Ferdinand I ordered the building of the Cerca Nova or Cerca Fernandina, the walled compound that enclosed the entirety of the castle. The master builders João Fernandes and Vasco Brás were responsible for its construction. This wall, which partially replaced the old Moorish walls, was designed to encircle previously unprotected parts of the city. Completed in two years, it had 77 towers and a perimeter of 5,400 metres (17,700 ft)

Hello Stephen,
I know I was here but I honestly don't remember this entrance. The tree growing in front of the gate is quite elegant and I like the other tree inside that seems to be resting on top of the arch. The black cobbled street could be slippery when wet, but it provides a strong foundation to the photo. The colours are very pleasant and the photo is well exposed.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Stephen,
The tree is framing well the arch. The point of view is showing the details of the arch and of the side wall. The light is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Bonjour Stephen,
Tu as eu beaucoup de chance pour cette composition car il n'y a absolument personne en vue pour interrompre ta relation avec cette porte magnifique. J'aime bien la chaussée qui semble humide.
Amicalement

Hello Stephen,
I vaguely remember this entrance from my 2013 visit and sat on the wall framed by the gate to get a nice shot looking down one of the streets leading to the harbour. Good sharpness and framing. Tfs!

Hi Stephen
Super detailing and view point with immense of good gritty details. A kind of oldie feel in it and this is as close to perfection as you can get leading to the imposing entrance. I love the depth and tonal contrast along with superb accentuation of the main focal. Excellent shot, Congrats
Best regards

Ciao Stephen
l'ingresso al castello è molto elegante, ma penso che sia stato aggiornato in un'altra epoca.
Il risultato è comunque armonioso e la foto ce lo presenta bene.
Buon we

Beautiful gate to the famous monument, the place has a great view over town and can be seen from everywhere, Stephen.
Paved stony road contrast and distinctly shown against the old walls.
Have a nice weekend,

Hi Stephen
(i'll post a new photo in a few hours)
So this is the entrance gate to the Castle, and you're saying I was very near to it - sigh - but you're right, when I was walking around up here something else caught my eye and I was then walking in a totally different direction. I had no idea I was so close :(
Well, its good to know what I missed, i'll keep an eye on your photos to find out haha. fine start to the series here with the open arch. cheers
Craig
