Photographer's Note

The first full week in the New Year 2010 was very cold with temperatures between –20C and –25C in my place, while the coldest place in central Norway was Røros with –43C. Brrrrrr!!

I decided to depict the cold wave in some way – which turned out to be more difficult than I thought when I started! How do you show –25C in an image without doing the obvious, namely photographing the thermometer?

What you see here is the final result – a great tit (Parus major) looking like a black and yellow tennis ball! The image shows the only practical measure that birds have to fight the cold, as they fill the plumage with air for better insulation.

Besides they need extra food to maintain body temperature – that is why this little fellow is trying to hypnotize me to give him more to eat..!
