Photographer's Note

Initially I thought this was the St Nicholas Church, but it's actually the Schimbarea la Faţă (Transfiguration) Cathedral. It was constructed in 1902 but during the Soviet occupation it was converted into a planetarium between 1962-1990 AD, when it was ravaged by a fire and it was deemed too expensive to repair, in October 1991. In 1991 the USSR collapsed and it was repaired and eventually reopened as an orthodox Russo Byzantine style basilica. It's a Greek design with a large central dome supported by 4 columns which saved it from demolition. Many other churches were simply blown up by the Soviets, especially if their bell towers were higher than the Soviet HQ across the street, as happened here to another church.
