Photographer's Note

The Fire Salamander “Salamandra salamandra” is one of the best-known salamander species in Europe.

I met this one walking in the woods in the north of Italy to reach the top of the Sacred Calvary Mount of Domodossola.

The small holes you see on the head (yellow background stain next to the eye) are poison glands used has it is grasped by a predator that are ejecting “neurotoxic alkaloid mandarin” causing strong muscle convulsions and hypertension combined with hyperventilation in all vertebrates.

Since it is rather rare to see them in nature I shot this picture to share it with you.

The picture was sharpened, contrasted and the colours enhanced.
