Photographer's Note

Bronze statue of Germanicus (1st century AD), accidentally found by a bulldozer in 1963 while work was in progress to expand a mill in Via delle Rimembranze, a few hundred meters from Porta Romana. The statue, of slightly larger proportions than true, the sculpture depicts the young Roman general (who died in Syria on his return from a military campaign in 19 AD), armed and covered with a richly decorated armor. The figure holds a spear in his left hand, while the right is raised in the symbolic gesture of addressing his army. For this reason, scholars believe that the statue was placed on the campus just outside the city, an area that is used for physical exercises and military training for local youth.
