Photographer's Note

Scarzuola is located in the town of Montegabbione Montegiove in town. Its name comes from a marsh plant, the Scarza, that St. Francis used to build a hut on one of his wanderings. In that place it was built in 1282 by the nobleman Nerio Bulgaruccio of the Counts of Montegiove, a church with a small Franciscan monastery. In the apse of the church, dedicated to the Annunciation, it is a fresco of the first half of the XIII century, depicting St. Francis in levitation. It is one of the earliest depictions of the saint, still out of the norm official iconography. The monastery, abandoned by the monks in the eighteenth century, was owned by the Marquis Misciattelli of Orvieto until 1956 when it was taken over by one of the greatest Italian architects of the twentieth century, the Milanese architect Tommaso Buzzi (1900-1981), who wanted to build, over twenty years of his ideal city, focused on seven theaters and inspired by the humanist ideal of harmonious composition of nature and culture. Along the route there are buildings with a strong symbolic value, even in the name (the tower of Babel, the musical scale of seven octaves, the scale of Job, etc.), and the climax of the performance comes with the Acropolis, a mountain buildings, empty inside and often overlapping. Overall great work always open, never finished, in which elements of the past overlap those of the present and of the future, has a use-abuse of stairs, disproportions wanted, monsters, labyrinthine paths, geometrical and astronomical.
