Photographer's Note

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the most emblematic monuments of Città Alta, Bergamo's historical quarter. It is located on the Piazza del Duomo, which forms a remarkable architectural complex with the Cathedral (il Duomo), the Baptistery and the Palazzo della Ragione (Palace of Reason).

Built in the second half of the twelfth century, the building combines the simplicity of the Romanesque-Lombard outside and the baroque exuberance of the interior.
If one believes the popular legend, the basilica was built to fulfill a vow to the Virgin Mary, which would have ended a drought a few years ago.
