Photographer's Note

This is one (among the smallest ones) of the many smoke electric power plants that are gathered in a close range in the region close to Ptolemaida (Kozani Prefecture) and Amyndaio (Florina Prefecture). This region is often called the "Locomotive" of the Greek energy policy and it provides around 70% of the total electric energy of the country.

It was back in the '50s when huge amounts of lignite where discovered in the area, and since then this "dirty" resource has become the No 1 resource in Greece. The first plant was constructed by Constantinos Karamanlis, uncle of the current Prime Minister of Greece. More than 55.000.000 tones (!) of lignite per year are used in these plants.

Two of the electric power plants of the area are among the 30 more "dirty" in Europe according to WWF. The plant of Aghios Dimitrios is causing the same polution as 3.000.000 cars (!) per year and the plant of Kardias as 2.100.000 cars. As a consequence, the people of the region seem to suffer more heart and cancer problems compared to the average in the rest of Greece.

The time for Greece to change its energy policy is now! In a country with so much sunshine and wind the percentage of the renewable energy resources is around 5,2%, while at the same time in Germany, for example, with worse weather conditions the same persentage reaches around 20%!
