Nafplio (Nauplio, Nauplion) is a town with around 14,000 inhabitants, it is located on the Aegean Sea on the Argolic Gulf. This is a port and tourist resort, a holiday resort for Athenians.

In ancient times it was an important Greek port, in the second century BC it lost its meaning and again became a large port in Byzantine times, especially from the 11th century.
This region was ruled by Franks, Turks and Venetians, and only after Greece regained its independence in 1823-1834, Nafplio became the first capital of the modern Greek state.

Nafplio is beautifully situated on the coast of the Argolic Gulf, most of the old town is on a peninsula jutting into the gulf. Above the town is the hill of Akronafplia with the Palamidi fortress, built in 1686-1715 by the Venetians, who on the hill rebuilt a fortress that existed since the Mycenaean times (7th century BC).
