Photographer's Note

One of the three radio antennas erected in the area of Anghyra in the 1930s by the Italian administration that ruled the Dodecanese then (1912-1943). Leros was turned into a major naval base and the radio transmitted programmes for the Italian army and civilians who lived on on the island. Gradually, the Italian language was introduced and then imposed in schools and when Mussolini's speeches were broadcasted through loudspeakers in the centre of the capital, Lakki, even the local people were obliged to attend or at least send a young member, who had learned some Italian at school.
