Photographer's Note

The mountain of Helmos is one of the most popular and also challenging among Greek hikers. It is located in Peloponnese region, in prefecture of Achaia and it is mostly known for its "wilderness", as there is barely anything else but rocks up there, as you can see in the picture, for the Gorge of Vuraikós and the snow center (on the other side of the mountain as seen here). The gorge is 20 kms long, it forms part of a National Resource Park, along with the mountain, and there lives a variety of remarkable flora and fauna species. Since 1889 there is also a unique train line that crosses the gorge, the famous "rack railway" which offers a very interesting ride all across the gorge. Every year, on the second Sunday of May, takes place an organized passage of the canyon, by the local mountaineering and hiking association.
