Early in the morning i visited the castle of Ioannina that was the headquarters of the Ottoman Empire in its West territory.
This building was the place of kitchens during the Ottoman era.Today is a beautiful and charmy caffe shop.
You can see here a larger, sharper and more detailed version of the photo.
The Ioannina Castle (Greek: Κάστρο Ιωαννίνων) is the fortified old town of the city of Ioannina in northwestern Greece. The present fortification dates largely to the reconstruction under Ali Pasha in the late Ottoman period, but incorporates also pre-existing Byzantine and ancient Greek elements.
Ioannina is first definitely mentioned in a 1020 decree by the Byzantine emperor Basil II, but it clearly existed for several centuries before. Traditionally, the foundation and first fortification of the city have been placed in the 6th century, when the historian Procopius (De Aedificiis, IV.1.39–42) records the construction of a new, "well-fortified" city by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I (r. 527–565) for the inhabitants of ancient Euroia. This view is not supported, however, by any concrete archaeological evidence.Early 21st-century excavations furthermore have brought to light fortifications dating to the Hellenistic period (4th–3rd centuries BC), the course of which was largely followed by later reconstruction of the fortress in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The identification of the site with one of the ancient cities of Epirus has not yet been possible. The Greek archaeologist K. Tsoures dated the Byzantine city walls and the northeastern citadel to the 10th century, with additions in the late 11th century, including the south-eastern citadel, traditionally ascribed to the short-lived occupation of the city by the Normans under the leadership of Bohemond of Taranto.
After the fall of the Byzantine Empire to the Fourth Crusade in 1204, the town's history was turbulent: it became part of the Byzantine Greek successor state of Epirus, fell to the restored Palaiologan Byzantine Empire in 1319, and was captured by the Serbian ruler Stefan Dushan in 1346.The Florentine adventurer Esau de' Buondelmonti captured the city from its Serbian rulers in 1385, to be followed by the Tocco family, rulers of Cephalonia and Zakynthos, from 1411 until the capture of the city by the Ottoman Empire on 9 October 1430.In the years immediately after 1204, the city walls and the northeastern citadel were reconstructed, while further reconstruction was undertaken in 1367–84 under Thomas Preljubović. The course of the Byzantine walls largely coincides with the extant fortification, but few details about it, such as the number and structure of the towers, were known until excavations during the last couple of decades.
The city remained under Ottoman rule from 1430 until captured by Greece in the First Balkan War in 1913. It enjoyed considerable prosperity, and reached the height of its pre-eminence under the rule of Ali Pasha, who became the ruler of a large semi-autonomous state encompassing much of modern-day Greece and Albania between 1787 and his downfall and execution in 1822. It is to the period of Ali Pasha's rule that the present form of the castle largely dates; the modifications or repairs undertaken on the Byzantine walls by previous Ottoman governors are now no longer discernible, as Ali Pasha initiated a wide-ranging reconstruction of the walls in the early 19th century, which was completed in 1815. It incorporated, as far as was possible, the pre-existing Byzantine fortifications, while adding a new wall in front. The interval was filled up with rubble or provided with arched galleries, forming a large terraced surface on top on which cannon could be installed.

Hello dear Danos,
Another wonderfull capture and entry in your gallery.
The architecture is quite unique; only a pity that the caffee operators didn't find a better solution as baladachin whşch would much better fit to the architecture.
Again many interesting notes makes your entry a perfect TE job.
TFS and have a good start in the new week

I stopped in Athens on the way to Cairo, but just stayed near the airport. Good sharpness and the layer of fog adds mood. The people add scale to the old Ottoman kitchen building. Tfs!

A very nice capture of this old building, bathing in such a fine, early morning light. The bluish background of the mountain slopes and the low-hanging clouds is very nice too.

Curious old architecture.
I like POV and composition.
alvaraalto (20328) 2016-05-16 2:30
The use as kitchen explains the large number of chimney-pots. I think this is a very attractive place to visit, to drink some coffee with some pastry and enjoy the surrounding like I enjoyed your picture.
ikeharel (78343) 2016-05-16 2:41
Fine inclusive view of the ancient edifice, with excellent view upon. each old brick appearing in wonderful texture and clarity.,
The couple visiting and the mountain ridge high and far behind, contributed scale and life to the scene.
My best regards,

A beautiful building from the Ottoman era.
The very pretty chimneys point well to the majestic mountains on the background.
The fog between the building and the mountains adds more depth to the picture.
Best regards, Paul

The view of the mountains in the background is impressive, and their soft colors make a wonderful contrast with the castle, giving very good depth to the scene! Wonderful composition! Excellent job!

The mountains is helping to frame this section of the castle. The point of view is showing the details of the kitchen building of the castle. The good luminosity is enhancing the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Quelle belle composition.

the towers in the roof, seen in an isolated framing, could be like towers in a rocky mountain. haha. very special building and natural landscape, a marvelous image. TFS.

The interest is still alive through your compositions. I like to contemplate the beautiful spaces.

It would have been a lovely restaurant, the building looks well-preserved and the view is just spectacular. What is the mountain in the background called?
shevchenko (20548) 2016-05-16 22:09
Good discovery and good frame to show an old castle in unique design especially the roof top that full with chimneys like structure, nice background mountain and fantastic with clouds just moving behind the castle, distinct photo, good shoot.

Royaldevon (43417) 2016-05-17 2:44
I can't think of a better way to use the kitchens of an Ottoman building, than to turn them into a cafe, serving interested tourists. It's a great way to keep the building in tip-top condition.
I like how the strong building, sharp in relief, is set against the misty, morning b/g.
The people add human interest to this ancient setting.
My warm regards,
adramad (49556) 2016-05-17 6:32
A magnificent composition, with this construction as original, especially the five turrets, we see on the roof, it is that it is a building of great strength all of it in stone, near the mountain in the background makes the most attractive place, currently the caffe shop should be very nice.
Very good brightness and sharpness, with beautiful colors.
Well seen and done better. I like it
Have a nice day.

A fine depiction of the intriguing olde edifice in favorable weather condition, great colours and detail with good sense of scale and depth accentuated by misty glimpse of the mountain backdrop. Nice capture
Cricri (125904) 2016-05-19 23:19
Une très jolie architecture avec les cheminées, j'aime l'angle de prise, le fond montagneux avec la brume, vraiment une belle image
mkamionka (39947) 2016-05-20 2:07
I didn't know all the history. It sounds as complex as the history of my country :)
Beautiful place. I like especially the effect caused by the fog behind the former kitchen.
Together with the huge mountain raising behind it results in an incredible atmosphere.
This works really inviting for a trip someday.
Have a great weekend,
fabianoleite (11971) 2016-05-24 7:13
Hi, Danos, this is a very peculiar construction, and you showed it to us from a well chosen perspective, especially due to the imponent mountain on the foreground. Nice inclusion of the couple to give us a bit of dimension. Well done, good work, congratulations!
