Good Morning Everyone,
It took some researching to find the name of this castle which I photographed from a boat, whilst on the Moselle.
I knew I had taken it when nearing Coblenz so it was a case of working backwards up the river.
Please click here to see the Beta version which is, without doubt, bigger and clearer.
It would seem that the castle has a long history but Roman pottery, found on the site, suggests that Roman occupation predates the castle which was begun in 1209.
The ruins of Thurant Castle stand on a wide hill spur made from slate above the villages of Alken on the Moselle in Germany, and belongs to the spur castle type. Next to the castley are vine gardens on the sunny side.
From the mid-13th century the archbishops of Cologne and Trier were joint owners of the site and had their respective property managed by burgraves. As a result, each half of the castle had its own bergfried, living and domestic buildings and a separate entrance.
From the early 16th century the double castle gradually fell into disrepair and was made a complete ruin during the destruction wrought by the War of the Palatine Succession.
Robert Allmers (1872–1951) from Varel, co-found of the Hansa Automobil company and, from 1914, Director of Bremen's Hansa Lloyd factories, purchased the site in 1911 and had part of it rebuilt.
The castle is still in private hands today, but may be visited from March to mid-November for a fee.
Thank you for your interest. Have a good w/e, Bev :-)

Hi Bev. The pic hangs a bit to the left but no problem, the composition is lovely, with the castle on the top of wineyards and the village too. A long history for this castle as i can read in your difficult research, but very useful.A very nice memory from your archive! Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Excellent capture from the river cruiser accompanied by some useful research on the internet. The castle is shown in context in its dominating position overlooking village and river. The neat lines of the vineyards occupying the area in between add a nice touch of graphism to the composition. The whole is well exposed and has very good colours and sharpness.

Taken out of a low position this wonderful panorama view about the mountain area.
An excellent depth and perspective.
Your creates a wonderful panorama view with the castle on the peak of the mountain.
Composition and presentation are superb.
Very well done, TFS.

This castle on the hill is almost childishly attractive. I would have been overwhelmed to see it when I was about 10-12, and I realize I still find it just as fascinating. The picturesque scenery surrounding it means a lot for the general impression, which is just slightly offset by the parked cars. But we don't live in the 13th century any more.

On se croirait presque en Angleterre dans cette très jolie composition.L'architecture est semblable et le château sur la colline est aussi très ressemblant. Superbe point de vue et très jolie lumière.

Great view from across the river, with perfect light condition, enhancing the smallest details, houses and vineyards on the slopes.
We had a ride along the Muselle, on our 06/2013 trip, but I do not remember this particular location though passed this location.
Anyway, a compo. well made, fine allocation of the picture space.
Bravo & good afternoon,

Bonjour, chère Bev,
Ce château médiéval ou féodal situé sur une motte surveille la ville et protège les habitants d'une éventuelle attaque, mais cela, c'était, il y a bien longtemps...
Belle mise en image, comme à l'accoutumée.

Hello Beverley, never having sailed down this river, this view is quite new to me.You have managed to give us a real flavour of what the area has to offer.
The castle on the hill is very interesting, especially viewing alongside your notes.
Have a good w/e.

I have to agree, the Beta versions really do look better don't they!
another good write up.
I always try to imagine how these castles and the surrounding areas looked back in the 13th century. Can you believe the horror and disbelief of the original owners today, if they knew their castle is basically part of a parade going down the river! A sight to see along the route.
Oh how times have changed. such a charming scene, very photogenic and it looks great in every aspect. lets bring back the Beta full time!

A beautiful view, which is really well composed. I like the combination of the proud castle on top of the hill, the town and its charming white church down by the river, and a tiny part of the water in the corner as well. You had some lovely sunlight as well.

Splendid view of this population on the banks of the Moselle, but what stands out our attention, are these slopes of the mountain covered with vineyards and at the same summit, the formidable vision of the splendid castle, with its two cylindrical turrets and a good series of buildings within its walls.
A great color that gives a lot of appeal to the image.
Very good management of both lighting and sharpness.
Well done. I like it.
Have a nice day.
Very best regards.

I have spent 7 years of my life in Germany, mainly in Bavaria but also in the north, however I have never visited this lovely region. Quite often I come across beautiful pictures from this area and I feel quite attracted to feel the gap on my German map of counties :)
Great scene here with the several layers of composition. The location of the castle is brilliant! The only thing which bothers me a bit is the feeling that the picture is tilted to the left.
Fantastic view though, I see you are reaching to the archives.
I am less often on TE because we have decided to buy a house here and first we were moving then decorating -we are in fact still in the progress of modifications. So last Saturday for the first time we went for a day trip. I will show some photos of it but probably later this week since I don't have as much time as I would like to.
