Photographer's Note

Paderborn is a city in the eastern part of the federal state North Rhine- Westphalia with today about 140000 inhabitants.

Already about the times of Christ's birth there has been a settlement of craftsmen near the crossing of two old routes of commerce here.
It is believed that Charlemagne spent considerable time in the area during his reign, and evidence in the form of ruins below and around Paderborn's cathedral seem to back this up. The construction of his imperial palace (Kaiserpfalz) here in Paderborn is considerd to be the hour of birth of the Middle Age German kingdom (Reich).
In order to ask for Charlemagne's help in 799 pope Leo III who had to leave Rome because of a revolt met him here in Paderborn. On the occasion of this they resolved upon Charlemagne's imperial coronation in Rome and they decided the establishment of the diocese Paderborn - today archbishopric.
In the same year the construction of the forerunner building of the today cathedral there began.

But I want to tell you something about this window ;-)

Next to the great cathedral (I'll show you the next days) there's a wonderful cloister of late Gothic with beautiful red sandstone windows (please see workshop). In one of these windows a skilful sculptor of the early 16th century created this actually unconspicuous - but fancy - today's landmark of the city - of course besides the cathedral!
There are instruction plates everywhere in the city "Zum Hasenfenster" (= to the window of the hares) and it is said that the visitor who didn't see it hasn't visited Paderborn!

Three hares, three ears - and each hare has two ears!

The marker in the map view funtion at the left shows you exactly the location of the famous window in the cloister.
