Photographer’s Note

The castles of Lastours (in occitan Lastors) are four castles cathares located on the commune of Lastours in the department of the Aude in Languedoc-Roussillon area. The four castles on a rocky outcrop above the village of Lastours are insulated by the deep valleys from Orbiel and Grésilhou. They were the bolt of Cabardès from where the name of the principal castle: Cabaret. They are built with 300 meters of altitude in the same axis: Cabaret, Surdespine, the Régine Tower and Quertinheux slightly in withdrawal. The site is classified with the historic buildings since 1905 and the archaeological excavations are always active. These four castles form part of only one unit well even if they do not have any joint structure. The natural context of the site made it possible to make the saving in a fortress of big size. The plans were adapted to the rocks on which they are built. Construction is aprfois heterogeneous because of spreading out of the rehandlings carried out on the castles.
