A perfect weather much sun to make a lovely bike trip to Merendree 10 km of Ghent, 20km of Bruges, 20 km of my home.

Second picture about the same canal than my previous picture.

The Ghent – Bruges connection is established (1600–1800)
Now that Ghent had also been cut off from its free access to the sea - it had to agree to a canal to Bruges on the Lieve, the Sassevaart and the Scheldt. In 1613 Parma issued the patent for a canal Ghent – Bruges – Ostend. This meant that the Zuidleie Canal and the Hoge Kale had to be widened, deepened and reconnected. In addition, there had to be a crossing from Vinderhoute (the Grote Kale) to Rooigem (canals of Ghent). These excavation works were carried out from 1618 to 1623. The new canal had no locks.
The canal quickly became busy, not only by cargo ships but also by passenger ships such as the famous Ghent barge. Between 1738 and 1754, the canal was made suitable for seagoing ships.

I hope you like it.
