Photographer's Note

continuing my hometown walkabout

Antwerp, which originated on a bend in the river Scheldt, is very much a port city. In the old days under Spanish rule it was the biggest trading port in northern Europe. These days most port activities (especially container shipping and chemical industry) have moved north of the city.

Some people call Antwerp the most northern of all southern cities.

This picture shows the pedestrian bridge leading to a raised riverfront promenade.

The distinctive building on the left is the Zuiderterras ('terrace of the south'), designed by b0b Van Reeth and built in 1991.

Since a couple of weeks the Zuiderterras is now home to the RAS, which stands for 'Restaurant Aan de Stroom' ('riverside restaurant') in reference to the MAS, Antwerp's landmark museum.
