Photographer's Note

continuing my hometown walkabout

Antwerp, which originated on a bend in the river Scheldt, is very much a port city. In the old days under Spanish rule it was the biggest trading port in northern Europe. These days most port activities (especially container shipping and chemical industry) have moved north of the city.

Being a port, the city has always been very much an international place. And Antwerp still ranks high on the list of cities with most nationalities.

This picture shows two boats on the old dockside. They belong to the shipping musuem (which is about to move to a new location). The impressive masts in the background belong to the Kruzenshtern, a Russian four-masted barque that took part in the Tall Ships Race this year.
