Photographer's Note

Trinidad's Carnival is the highlight of the year! Celebrations begin almost immediately after Christmas and run up until the climax on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

The concept of "Carnival" is said to have originated in Trinidad when slaves captured by the French were finally freed and created Carnival.

Trinidad Carnival is perhaps the best known in the world alongside the carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The big difference being that Carnival in Trinidad really is for the people of the island and not purely a spectators event for tourist. Thousands upon thousands of people take to the streets in colourful costumes and parade to the sounds of Soca, Calypso and Steel Bands. Although Carnival does bring a lot of tourism to the island the islanders would continue to party if the tourists ever stopped coming.

This lady played in the Mas Band "Yuma." This year each of the sections of Yuma represented signs of the Zodiac and this was the costume for Libra.
