the day is drawing to a close
a Mayan lady is rushing home
her family awaits

Hello Kristaps! I don't know if you can rush home with such a heavy load on your back :))) but okay she is 10 or 12 ... at this age you are always in a hurry and there seem no limits to what you can do but maybe some years later I am not too sure about her back but nobody cares at this corner of the world, I guess. I really like this photo, it shows a lot without showing too much but we understand. Have a good weekend, Barbara.

as far as I'm concerned, the main purpose of travel photography is to "capture the sense of the place", and this photo does exactly that. the all-present history and culture of the Maya, the prominence of manual labour, the importance of agriculture, child labour - I can find all of that in this seemingly simple photo. powerful stuff.

K.

Hi Kristaps,
It's good to see you post a new image. It is a powerful shot, but if "woman" really is just a child of 10-12 it is all the more heart rending. I remember one shot of yours with a small crowd of Maya sitting on the steps of the cathedral in Colatanango, I believe, evocative of a photo I once saw in the National Geographic.

Bulent

Hi Kristaps. This is a moving image, even if the individual was not a child. But being a child makes it more poignant, knowing that a life of toil for little returns is in front of her and that she will age prematurely. No glossy magazines for her and going to school and having a room, TV, computer, latest fashionable clothes...A powerful photo and significantly taken from the back to point to the heavy load and not the face, as she is one of millions in the third world whose life's path is already written.Regards. Klaudio.
