Photographer's Note

Da Nang Bay: a fisherman tends his fire on the beach, with local coracles (thung-chai) beyond, Đà Nẵng, Viet Nam.

Đà Nẵng is the third largest city in Vietnam in terms of urban population and one of the country's major port cities. This doesn't mean that there isn't still an apparently thriving fishing fleet of basket boats, or "thung-chai" as they are called. I wasn't aware until I saw them, that coracles - which in effect they are - were a feature of Vietnamese coastal life. But they are still popular, and a very convenient (and cheap) way of getting to where the fish are, or at least out to the bigger boats anchored offshore. They are made of bamboo plaited together, and waterproofed every six months or so. And out to sea I saw several "thung chai" moored in the open sea: I'm astounded at how seaworthy they are! This man paid me no attention as I stole a few shots of him preparing his supper.
