Photographer's Note

There are many tuktuk images in TrekEarth (perhaps not as many as Petronas towers...) yet I wanted to bring my point of view, not that I think it's invaluable, but thought the lith print rendition would help recall the experience and the gritty feel of a tuktuk ride through nightly Bangkok streets.

This is my also a tribute to Steely's image which I think gives the "closest to viewing" image of riding into a tuktuk.

If you never rode a tuktuk just imagine how you'll have to convince the tuktuk driver in simple words that the ride to Patpong is not worth more than 30 bahts though he demands a hefty 100.

Then have your share of hot fumes, burnt oil smell and intolerable engine roar, all of it accompanied with such speed and bumps that you expect your 3 wheeler to overturn at the next street crossing.

Fortunately enough, the driver stops his engine at the first traffic jam and starts speaking about Zidane or Beckham whereabouts (It is notorious that all Bangkok tuktuk drivers know everything about the footballers lives but still want to know more from you, just in case...).

I'll stop doing humor now and let you imagine the gloomy life of an open tuktuk driver through Bangkok heavy polluted traffic, breathing their air at trucks' exhaust pipes level and under an average temperature of 32°. Thais say that all tuktuk drivers take yaa baa, which is cheap local amphetamines, to survive... I can believe that their life is not a magic carpet ride...

For people who haven't been in Thailand yet, and despite what I wrote, taking a tuktuk is really part of the experience moreover it's faster than any other taxi (you won't also catch any flu like I did with the wild siberian aircon of the only taxiride I took in Bangkok).
