Photographer’s Note
Still part of my theme on the 'Phuket Vegetarian Festival', but a slightly tamer shot in comparison to the ones I've posted recently. As I walked the procession route on the second morning, I tried to change my focus more to the spectators and local Thai people who came out for the occasion. As I stood on the side of the road, looking down the street to my left, I saw this father and son. The little boy has cotton in his ears and the blanket over his head to protect him from the loud bangs and any firecracker fragments. I caught a fleeting glimpse as he peered out from under his blanket, and quickly realized the shot potential. With my 70-200mm lens, I was far enough to not make it obvious that I was shooting them. I waited for probably 2 minutes before the father realized what I was trying to shoot- and he flipped the blanket up.
Amazingly as though almost on cue, the little boy clapped his hands together in the traditional prayer posture. I'm a firm believer that success is when preparation meets opportunity, and I like to think that is what happened for me on this shot.
I hope you like the shot, more to come...

Ouch, kids as young as this are allowed to enjoy the bloody show? Obviously, this portrait doesn't have the strong impact of the previous ones, but it is nicely composed and appealing in its own way. I bet this dad would love it, even if it could be a touch sharper. Great expressions.

Hi Dan
It looks like, that kids have to wai to the camera hahaha I have shot similar pictures then yours. Nice framing and clever light management to produce vivid colors with high sharpness, despite the fact that father and son where in the half shadow. Well done
Best regards

It's a great portrait of father and son - nice gentle lighting and the poses are good. Nice timing with the prayer hands!

Hi Dan
Great portrait of these two. You managed to get some catchlight in their eyes despit the blanket and the cap. I always like to catch people this way rather than in an intentional pose. The 70-200 is an excellent lens for that. If those speckles on the blanket are from the firecrackers I can see why he would be wearing it.
Cheers

Taking a break from the knifes and swords, this is a portrait of great warmth. Universal, rather than exotic. People just are the same anywhere, vegetarians or not, sticking swords through their cheeks or not...
Great 'breather', Dan!
