Photographer's Note

I have already posted a few photos from my trip to Sri Lanka...here is one more from Bogawantalawa...the Kirkoswald Tea Estate makes some of the best tea in the world and here, at the crack of dawn, pluckers gather to pluck the most tender leaves that are then processed into high class tea.

Until the 1860s coffee was the main crop produced here. But in 1869, the coffee-rust fungus, Hemileia vastatrix, killed the majority of of the coffee plants and estate owners had to diversify. Tea turned out to be the natural alternative and since then it has become one of the biggest exporters in the world.
