Photographer's Note

Dragon dance, or Barongsai as chinese Indonesians call it. Unlike some western myth where dragon is potrayed as evil being, the chinese (or general asians) consider Dragon as a wise and noble animal (maybe that's why Godzilla: the movie never made a big hit in Asia heheh)

Dragon dance (and Lion Dance) is a common sight in a Chinese New Year festivals. While the dragon usually played by team of 6-8 people, the lion is played by 2 persons only. When played at night (or twilight as seen in this photo), the dance is preceded by a person who carries a torch to illuminate, making the whole show more enchanting.

This photo was taken during the Huayi - Chinese Festival of Arts 2005 at Esplanade, Singapore featuring the 9 dragons usher featured in this photo. It is believed that having a Dragon Dance to begin a new year brings good fortune for the year to come.
