Photographer's Note

i decided to re-post this foto (larger image and framed) as i remember it is now almost lanzones season back home in the philippines. it is a seasonal crop that produces fruits early in late september thru early november and harvest time mostly starts january onwards. it is known as the 'aristocrat' fruit, lanzones are grown widely from north to south. it is believed to be native of malaysia. in other southeast asian nations, lanzones are either known as langsat, lansa, langseh, langsip, lanson, lanzone, duku etc...i have seen this fruit, to my surprise in far away sydney and melbourne and was told that it is grown locally in the state of queensland; in vancouver, lanzones are seen sold in many chinatown fruit/vegetable stores which are imported fresh from thailand; in los angeles, from vietnam!
lanzones grows out of a slender tree in bunches that look like grapes but with thicker and stronger stems; it is covered with a leathery skin that turns yellow when riped, the inside portion reveals a luscious translucent sections each containing a bitter seed (which is not edible). as i said in my early posting, when one sees a brigade of black ants around the bunch, the fruits are ready for harvest and yes, the sweetest of the sweets!
