In many parts of Southeast Asia, when not in school, children are helping their parents working on the farm, taking care of their younger siblings or tending to business. This girl was helping her mother tending the shop selling hand woven baskets and things. She knew her numbers in English and could speak a few words of English. She asked me if I would like to buy a basket for my girl friend. I told her I don’t have a girl friend if I could buy one for her. She said, “No, I’m not your girl friend.” I was surprised about her answer and played along. I told her I was heart broken and pretended to cry. She just gave me that smile and....
