[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
The Orissa people I met are for 99.99% open, friendly, sharing, beautiful, colourful ... The .01% who are closed, unfriendly, internally focussed, distant are the Dunguria Kondh people - at least the ones I visited. Photographers not welcome. This picture I stole (shooting from the hip).
The village consist of very low houses left and right to a road that is a block of 50cm high concrete (courtesy of the Indian Government to prevent diseases).

Tried to communicate - no result! Pointed my camera - uneasiness, avoidance! There must be a reason behind this behaviour - so I'm not judging them - but I was unable to discover which one(s).

Hallo Alfred, very interesting comment and picture. I like the look of the two men (I think, they hated you) and the houses that drive your eyes along the diagonal of the picture.

perfect framing and light ! i like the way the diagonal goes up to the right and how these men all look at you! simple shot , yet a grand one alfred! bravo
Eric

I assume bad experiences with previous tourists, or with white people in general. I've had similar situation in one Bonda village, only there they demanded money very insistively, what more the most demanding were the people that I didn't shot at all...
for a "from hip" picture it's quite good, you even managed to capture this aura of unwelcomeness..

Nice long perspective making a simple but strong main composition. The guys repeat so nicely in pose and expression making them worth more together than just the sum of to guys (picturewise that is!)

I kind of like this image.. Mainly because of the two guy's way of standing up.. looking at you.
I also like the panorama format, well adapted in that case...
have a nice Week end.

hey alfred
pretty ncie result for a hip shot
about these people not being friendly

well.. i'm not very sure but maybe it's because there are lots of remote place in orissa ( as well other states) that are facing problems or atleast have a dominating presence of naxalites.
atleast in the newspapers we do read quite often that someone or the other has been killed by naxalites.( not saying that this information is true, but we get to read it sometimes)

now hypothetically speaking this area is being "harassed" by naxalites on a daily basis.. i don't really expect them to be welcoming any tourists with a camera with open arms.. they're bound to be suspicious of every one..

it's the same for any place undergoing turmoil like this.. so there should be a reason why they are not so friendly and all that..

not that what i'm saying IS the reason.. but who knows..

take care :)

Good set of notes that goes to highlight the fact that not everyone appreciates having a camera pointed at them and that you do have to be aware of local customs.

I like the composition - i.e. the repeated line of buildings and standing men - in regards to the 'ethics' of the shot - I would pose a question - if you lived under these conditions would you welcome photographs being taken by a stranger? - BTW this is not meant to be a 'put down' but just an observation :)

Hi Alfred, I like the way the 2 guys are seperated but have a similar pose. Also the huts are interesting (and unusual I think).
I was just reading some very interesting stuff about the Kondh (and their unusual sexual practices and sacrifices, and the Dombs) in Norman Lewis's excellent book 'Goddess in the stones', which I recommend without hesitation.
I also found all the people I met in Orissa to be extremely friendly, and thought it a wonderful place.
cheers, David

Very good work Alfred! I like the fact that a lot of context is included to give us a glimpse of his abode (and his personality). Well-done.

I was wondering about your note never experienced that .
And when I look back at your photo you feel this attitude more clear now, I think their poverty living on the edge of society could be a cause to feel down to see a tourist considered rich armed with a camera spotting their poverty.
I like the perspective pano view and the very learning content with it.

Otimo trabalho.
Greetings.
