[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
We stayed overnight at an orphanage for girls. The 200 girls are very well looked after: schooling, hygiene, food, love… all provided by a dedicated and wonderful staff.
Off-course their diet is mainly rice as money is available but not in abundance. The orphans were extremely friendly, mastered some English, and showed us around. …

We bought 600 eggs and with the support of their cook, provided them a surprise meal.
Afterwards they song and danced for us (this is what this picture is all about). We gave them also each 10cc of hair-shampoo. While the food generated lots of interest, the shampoo nearly caused a stampede. I was a very tender moment when the next morning at 6AM we saw them go for a wash up to the river, each holding the little plastic shampoo cup...

The drama is that when a girl reaches 16, she can’t stay anymore in the orphanage and needs to find ways to support herself (I will leave the 3 dots out this time). So my wife and I are organizing here in Luxembourg some events to gather money so that the orphanage can start a second venture: further schooling, looking for jobs etc.

Hi Alfred,
Thanks for the information, it makes the picture a lot more interesting. Other than because of the story of these girls, I think this picture is really nice because of the strange effect the glowing eyes creates. It's almost like looking at stars on the sky.

Simon

great sensible and human note alfred! You ought to meet francine (faubry). she is also an activist in a NGO that she created to help women around the world.. she is right now in tamil nadu trying to help set up a project to help fishermen's wives after the tsunami. and leaving soon in yakoutie where she founded a school for kids in the wide arctic desert... so they could stay close to their relatives..

keep on the good work
Eric

I almost passed this shot up, Alfred, but am glad I stopped. This is an amazing capture of a moment frozen in time - the eyes and lively faces entrance the viewer, and nothing posed. Well done.

Hi Alfred
Lovely portrait of the girls - and a lovely note to go with it.
Regards,
Sarah

very interesting note, showing us how difficult life can be for women in the world. I love the photo too, with all the different glances from the girls.

Oh a lovely group of kids and story to follow - I whatched an TV-series about an English family who volentired to live like people around 1900 - the had only gas-light and only old times shampoo - I think they cheated and got the real stuff - coulden't live without.

Thanks for sharing Alfred - nice to see somebody cares.
