Just a snapshot from Jorhat, a medium-sized town in Assam state in the remote northeastern part of India. I happened to notice this less than half built house and saw the two men busy at work.
This is what I would call an ideal distribution of tasks, one man laying the bricks and the other supervising him. What I don't quite understand is why they started on this floor, why there are so many plants on the floor below, why this skeleton of a house was built among what looks like slum huts, why there is a satellite dish on a house where nobody lives, why...?
So many questions and I will never know.
I guess you could call this photo nothing special, but it was probably the most special building i saw in Jorhat, a town off the tourist track and with no magnificent temples or palaces. Here is a larger version.
If you want to see other men in Jorhat really at work, please have a look at the workshops.

They also serve who sit and wait! Very funny daily life image. Nothing special but it tells you something about the building trade in India. Well composed; excellent technical realisation.

Hi Gert,a scene that reminds me a lot what happens in Italy, but in my country a man works and 6 watch...ehhee...great idea and a lot of question as i can read in your note, all wihout a logical answer..ehehe..i like the 2 ws,hard worka and the trucks ful of vegetables over the cherge limits. Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano
ikeharel (79099) 2017-03-12 1:56
As said before, all three pic.s posted worth to be main-photos on TE. But, I guess you have a reason for the WS's.
Excellent view upon the building at work, one guy is the manager...
Distinct contrast and fine clarity, well collected.
Have a nice Sunday,

Bonjour, cher Gert,

This photo has a certain timeless feel with the man having a rest on the chair and the other guy building that wall very slowly. This also reminds me to, what I heard about the work moral here in Hungary during the socialism. :) I also like how they underpinned the last floor. My parents are architects and construction supervisors, I don't think they would let anybody continue such a house here.
So, for me it is an interesting photo.
alvaraalto (20538) 2017-03-12 3:39
I think almost everything at this picture is special. A scene you have to observe with open mouth, wondering, like you did, how everything can be explained.
Maybe this already is the ultimate sun health and fitness-club.
Have a nice Sunday

all of the pictures in this little series are very interesting, they feature different views and themes and give us rewarding slices of daily life. I have (guess) answers to all of your questions but I think that the puzzles the scene evokes make its impact even stronger. I like all of your compositions and the way they are adjusted to the scenes and stories. The colours are vivid and in the main post I think that there's an intriguing play of scale too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Two men busy at work, or one busy at work!
The two additional picture are also very nice.
Much people but few working effective.
A nice panorama view too.
Very well composition, TFS

Curious building, interesting scene.
Work 1+1 :)
Good frame, colors and sharpness.

Hello Gert ,
Ah ah ! What a funny scene ! This building seems to be partially used , despite of the fact it is not finished at all . The presence of the two men , one of them sitting , and the other one trying to build a brick wall is of course a great bonus .
Thanks for the share .

nice the view of the snapshot with the skeleton of the building that were under construction during your shot and the two men in it.I think that the sitting man is te boss and the other his worker...Good presentation.
jmdias (69196) 2017-03-12 10:48
I guess the satellite dish was up there because the place was high and we can see the wire going down to the house below. anyway it is a really curious building, the plants, the man seated, the brick wall being created up there.. very strange, but in india everything is different. haha.
I remember a discussion I had with a swedish tourist in brazil, he was upset because things aren't so organized as he wanted they were, an in a moment of an ger he asked me: where is the motto of your national flag? where is the order and the progress? and I said him: this is a target to be reached some day. and he because furious. haha.
ktanska (29421) 2017-03-12 10:55
Yest this one was really worth a closer look. And questions you mentioned inded pop up. Who knows, maybe the guy on the chair has bought that one floor of the unfinished buiding and supervises that something is done to it!
Cricri (126666) 2017-03-12 12:01
PiotrF (23132) 2017-03-12 13:50
An interesting series of images of Jorhat.
Yes, you're right, a lot of questions unanswered.
kordinator (15427) 2017-03-12 14:06
Well photographed, places composition.
Excellent view upon the building at work.
Splendid colors, perfect exposure and sharpness.
kasianowak (10591) 2017-03-12 14:34
An alternative title: "overemployent". I just hope they swap places from time to time and the man working now can sit down and watch the other one work...
You ask interesting questions. Maybe the satellite dish is there for the "supervisor" (or both men) to watch TV when he (they) gets bored with watching another man work. :-)
Three amazing daily life photos. The first WS made me sad, the second one made me smile (including the calf under the truck with only hind legs visible). All three would make fine main uploads.
carlo62 (55660) 2017-03-12 14:54
jean113 (5867) 2017-03-12 15:01
Hello Gert,a very interesting building indeed, with lots of unanswered questions as listed by yourself!
The advertisements look as if they have been there a while. And the actual building does not look very safe at all.
The seated man seems to be aware of you, maybe?
I think that you ought to return to see what progress has been made!!!
Thanks for sharing, regards
rychem (43282) 2017-03-12 16:42
Indeed a strange scene, this way to build first the skeleton and then the walls is known in any countries, but the surroundings, advertising and the activities of these men are really unusual, very well captured
macjake (73057) 2017-03-12 23:47
yes, men at work is another one of those TE themes we've all come to enjoy, such as water and glass reflections, windows, doors, laundry day etc...
as i've mentioned to you before, I always get a kick out of the adds we see in India...take a look at that one in your scene, thats so funny.
and I don't think anyone can answer your questions, when it comes to India and development, it just is what it is!
funny and interesting, and cultural. cheers
Tue (43818) 2017-03-13 0:04
It indeed is a picture which raises a lot of questions. This unfinished structure is a puzzling one, but it makes the photo all the more interesting of course, also with these fitness signs. One also wonders what this building looks like now, several years later. Very well seen and captured in a fine lighting.

Hello dear Gert and have a nice time
and a happy new day
Roday the weather is excellent with a wonderful
sun because the previous days was too bad and
rainy I like this photo so simple but impressive
too the whole idea and inspiration is that
one man is laying the bricks and the others
supervising him me too I have the same questions
and many why ?????
Royaldevon (43865) 2017-03-13 6:27
A series of three most interesting photographs! They are all worthy of main posts because of their unusual captures but this one is the amusing example!
I have studied and. like you, find it all so amusingly confused!!
It is a health cub! Maybe show your prowess by girder climbing to the upper floors!
Maybe the builders are keen to create a pent house, the guy in the chair issuing instructions to the builder, who is unfamiliar with such a design!!!
Oh, there are so many possibilities, all worthy of Monty Python!
Have a good day,
My first thought was this was in Greece because we have seen many half finished buildings there but, on closer inspection, they aren't so mixed-up!!
sacimar (28927) 2017-03-13 6:41
good title for the moment you captured here, I like the scene with the building in construction, it is an interesting subject, well seen,

Du måste ha haft anteckningsböcker under dina resor?
batalay (40521) 2017-03-14 8:39
For me, what makes this photo special is the man seen in silhouette taking a break. Until I read your note, I had spotted the satellite dish. I imagine the sign signals "the future home of Sun Health Club."
Yesterday you critiqued the photo of the "Unfortunate King Sebastian" that I had just posted. If you are as curious about the statue's destruction click on the following newspaper account to find the answer: Daily Mail 25 November 2016. It will make you as angry as it has made me.
worldcitizen (9450) 2017-03-14 9:44
This looks like a strange way to go about constructing a building. I hope a strong wind doesn't blow it down once it's finished! Maybe all those plants are used to make the fitness nutrition supplements that are being advertised. :-) It's an interesting daily life view.
dale54 (9050) 2017-03-14 12:01
gert hello..TFS this very interesting shot from india..and a satellite dish?? very interesting to look at,nice close crop,POV,sharpness, and color! dale
PaulVDV (32665) 2017-03-15 4:38
The guy on the left on the second floor did not like to wait till the building was finished. He started already with furnishing his living room. A chair and probably also a TV since we see the satellite dish, are a good start. Possibly it's still a bit draughty inside his home :)
And the people on the first floor have already lots of plants on their balcony. Furniture will come later ...
Best regards, Paul
adramad (49946) 2017-03-15 10:53
India is a country of contrasts, this fanciful image is a faithful exponent of it, the half-built house, plants on one of the floors, likewise billboards, a man who seems to put a few bricks on another of the plants, while another relaxes quietly sitting on the couch, really curious and nice .....
Great color, which gives a lot of appeal to the image.
Very good brightness and perfect sharpness.
Well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
All the best.
mcmtanyel (29608) 2017-03-15 22:00
Maybe those plants are source of Tara's fitness nutrition. I like this ordinary scene from Jorhat. In fact, such scenes are just as precious to me as shots of famous sites. I like the interesting truck in WS #1 and the man in WS #2 is doing the real work!
emka (107671) 2017-03-16 15:13
Hi Gert, Very curious picture with si many questions that are without the answer. all this look quite surreal. The man supervising the working man noticed you. But such unfinished houses are quite common in Peru, all districts. Very often with the dogs in upper floors. Amusing picture. Beautiful pictures in Workshop. The people usually work very hard with the big burdens. Amazing view of this big truck so full of goods. How much can it weigh?
Kind regrad s Malgo
saxo042 (37968) 2017-03-17 9:09
ChrisJ (118817) 2017-03-17 16:21
Reminds me of Bangladesh. The same lack of urgency and profusion of half finished buildings. The bamboo scaffolding is an interesting twist. Tfs!
serp2000 (45970) 2017-03-18 7:41
They have good climate for similar constructions. Now they can fill these frames by any content. I also have photos of the building constructions from my trip to Goa. And yes, the bamboo sticks are still working as the necessary supplies for buildings.
clic (18542) 2017-03-18 15:26
Hello Gert For shure, this is a cool and well-aired design!
As for the antenna, it looks like being aimed to the american Construction Channel that broadcasts tips to builders! Interestingly, you wrote about the new trend of building modest medium size new dwelliings which quality is inserted between luxury and poverty. Basta halsningar
Hansaphotos (8739) 2017-03-19 3:12
Herlig:)
