Photographer's Note

The chemistry of smile needs a delicate mix.
Joy, Trust, Synchronicity...
With some people, like here, you find it immediately, in the interaction; with some others, it is more difficult. :)

Taking portraits can be challenging for that reason, and one of my pleasures, in Orissa, was to try to make my would-be models to change their minds completely...
The first glances we were harvesting, on the markets, could be cold and full of suspicion... my challenge was to make them turn warm and friendly.

Despite our cameras in hand, we needed to be seen, not like photo-hunters, but as a team of teacher and student in photography, something which was much more reassuring for the locals, and that was allowing us a more natural and familiar contact with them. My fellow traveler Tushar had always a good story to provide, to explain who was the teacher, and who was the student. Depending on his mood, and on the situation; sometimes it was him the teacher; sometimes he was the student. :)

One of the sellers, on the picturesque market of Koraput, seated in front of her stall. Do you think it worked?
