Photographer's Note

For quite some time I debated which picture I should post as my 200th....exactly 13 months after I posted my first photo in TE. I decided on this because it best represents photographers, trying to get the best POV for the best shot, sometimes trying to show an oft photographed subject (in this case a standing pillar, soaring some 15.9 metres high) differently.

This picture was taken in Kailasa Temple in Ellora - the largest monolithic structure in the world, carved top-down from a single rock. It contains the largest cantilevered rock ceiling in the world. I had taken the shot with an old borrowed FUJICA STX-1N Film camera.

Quality Issue : This picture was taken in 1991 & the picture had undergone the Kolkata humidity treatment for 15 years. Then the scan from the print, trying to remove the bad portions, removing the magenta cast & the noise. Still the quality had a lot to be desired & can nowhere be compared to a digital output. So I decided to crop a part of the picture, use sepia toning & then partial desaturation so that, at least the key figure of the photographer stands out.

Composition wise, I guess this is quite OK, maybe a bit too central. But I am not trying to justify or reason the issue of quality at all.

So pls. give honest & if necessary harsh critiques/comments, if you have issues about the quality. My idea was simply to post this for what it represents – photographers like us trying to show sights from around the world in our own unique way & sharing them in this great site.

WS : The uncropped, coloured version before converting to sepia

PS : Life has been put into a bit of turbulence, as I am set to move yet again in work (transfer, as we call it), this time to Delhi...that would make it 4 relocations in the last 6 years for me & my family . I would be travelling a bit up & down between Bangalore & Delhi in the next couple of months trying to tie up things necessary to settle down in a new place. Hence I’m afraid my posts may be a bit erratic during this period, unless everything goes on smoother than expected.
