Gelati - Cathedral of the Virgin

In the wooded hills just outside the city of Kutaisi we find the monastery complex of Gelati. (isn’t that a wonderful name?)

Gelati was founded by King David the Builder in 1106.
Many Georgian rulers were buried here, including David.
The monks were cast out by the communists in 1922 but the churches were reconsecrated in 1988.
Information from LP Guide.

On the picture you see the Cathedral of the Virgin.
Inside numerous colourful frescoes can be admired. They were painted between the 12th and the 18th centuries.

Two more pictures in the workshop.
The Gelati complex is visible from in the center of the city of Kutaisi. That picture is taken on the hill of the Bagrati Cathedral. The photo shows well the heavily forested region of Kutaisi.
