Sighnaghi - First glance at Sighnaghi

This is the view visitors have when arriving in Sighnaghi, at least when coming from Tbilisi.
A very pretty sight when you arrive somewhere for the first time.

Sighnaghi is a small town in the east of Georgia, in the province Kakheti.
With 2.300 habitants it’s one of the country’s smallest towns.

Beautifully situated on a hilltop, with most of its buildings from the 18th or the 19th century and with many cypress trees, guide books describe Sighnaghi as an Italian-looking town.

Perhaps my memories of Italy have been faded too much already because I didn’t think that the town had much Italian atmosphere. Maybe with the exception of this view at the arrival.
In contrast, I found it a wonderful Georgian city. More pictures will show that later.

Sighnaghi has been renovated thoroughly and yes, it is touristic (at least according to Georgian standards). But it is a very beautiful and picturesque town and a real paradise for photographers.
There are also lots of inexpensive hotels and guest houses.

The town looks out over the Alazani Valley towards the Caucasus.
On the picture the Caucasus peaks are hidden behind the clouds. These clouds usually cover the tops. You will need to be very lucky and have a special day to see the snowcapped peaks.

Economically important for Sighnaghi are the production of wine, traditional carpets and tourism.
