Photographer's Note

It's not as easy as I thought to take a photo of passersby with a certain pre-decided background. Didn't have anything to focus on except the wall, which gave me the problem that passersby would probably be unsharp. Tried a few shots... in vain, but then I got double lucky. The best subject imho, thus far approached as the women were walking slowly at a steady pace, giving me the time to focus on them.

Taken at a small alley in Yarkand, an oasis dusty Uyghur town on the edge of Taklamakan desert.

Curious what's written on the wall?

It's Hammer & Sickle slogans - politically the Communist Party of China is the sole governing party of PRC government, sprayed bold in red on almost every bare wall across the province as a gentle reminder as to who is in charge here now. For centuries, the majority of traditional inhabitants of East Turkestan have been Uyghurs, a Turkic Muslim ethnic group whose language, religion and culture contrasts with that of the Han Chinese. In recent years, Hammer & Sickle have launched a rapid campaign to develop this region.

This campaign has led to a dramatic influx of Han into this province - robbed by Mao & Co in 1949. As demographics change and industry begins to boom, the Uyghurs are faced with increasing marginalization and pressure to assimilate and the majority of whom are slated to be moved out from their traditional homes. This resulted in diluting of Uyghur prominence as now they are a minority and strangers in their own land. Large sections of their town have been dramatically & systematically demolished and modernised as part of commie’s ongoing push to sinicize Uyghur homeland.

After 60 years of oppression by the CPC, Uyghur life persists amid growing tension in the province even till today. The oppressive authorities are known to lock up any Uyghurs seen talking to foreigners. Rights groups routinely accuse the authorities of heavy-handed rule, including violent police raids on Uyghur households, restrictions on Islamic practices and curbs on the culture and language of the Uyghur people.
