Photographer's Note

One of the hightlights of our recent trip to China was a horse trek in the area around Langmusi. Up on the grasslands at about 4,000m we spent the night in this friendly lady's yurt.

She and her family are Tibetan nomads who live with their yaks up in the mountains and on the high grasslands in Amdo, the old Tibetan region that now makes up parts of the Chinese provinces Gansu, Qinghai and Sichuan.

It's hard life where women do most of the work.

This shot was taken early in the morning. Our lady is out among the yaks with two yurts and more yaks in the background.

Every evening the animals are rounded up and tied down near the yurt to be guarded by a fierce family dog. In the morning the yaks are to be milked, then released again to wander around on the plains. Their droppings are then collected and dried to be used in the stove.

It's a hard life, a very hard life.
