The Humble Administrators Garden in Suzhou is possibly the finest garden in all of east China. It's hard to believe that this wilderness area is in the middle of a major metropolitan city of over 4.5 million people. Some guide books recommend the Master of the Nets garden, but that one is quite small and seen quickly. I prefer this one which takes a good 2 hours to savour & gives the impression you are far from the city.

The name is a bit of a misnomer as there is nothing humble about this garden with its elaborate bridges, tea-houses, rock pools with fish & mandarin ducks and walking tracks. No expense was spared when the gardens were built. More information here.
