Photographer's Note

You may be forgiven for thinking that I have a fascination for ear-cleaners after my recent upload of ear-cleaners in Old Delhi, but the truth is what I found fascinating here was this was taken in one of the many tea houses in Chengdu. The teahouses are not only a place to sit and drink tea, but to gather, catch up on news and gossip, play mahjong or cards and to enjoy a massgae or indeed an ear-cleaner. How differnt our cultures are? An abloution that we prefer to perform privately. Could you imagine sitting in a pub or cafe sipping a pint or latte and having your ears cleaned?
Let me extend the story a little, my English speaking Chinese companion, thought my accent was Australian then continued to laughingly tell me that the Chinese word for "australian" sounds very similar to the Chinese word for "chatting with fellow squatters whilst going to the toilet" ----- how many cultures have a word for that? :)
Happy weekend.
