Photographer’s Note
These children live in the caves below the famous Buddhas of Bamiyan. In all there were four children, the eldest being the girl with the green headscarf and the youngest a mere baby. There were no adults to be seen, presumably they were working in the fields.
The young girl showed us her deformed finger and her torn clothes and worn out shoes. I don't think there was much that could be done locally to help with her hand but I left her a little money so she might replace her footwear.
Two donkeys stood in the shadow in front of the cave they call home. The children sat and stood nearby with dung all around. A pitiful existence.
There are many unfortunate people in Afghanistan and these children seem less fortunate than most. I can only hope the future holds something better for them.

Very poignant. The expressions are well caught, and your note matches the image perfectly. Great light as well. This photo highlights the fact that Afghanistan is a lot more than beautiful scenery, it is a lot of shattered lives too. Excellent work!

Hi Jonathan, The first photo on TE that really gets to me; it breaks my heart when I see sorrow and you captured it raw, right in your face, but with so much respect and serenity. The desperate and mature look in this little girls face is very emotive, but the way you played with the light still gives it a shine of hope. I also like the duality this photo expresses as there are 2 ways to react upon misery, either you face it or you turn away. I'm glad you make us face it with this touching and stunning portrait. Thank you. Sabine

Hi Jonathan, A touching story and a touching picture. From her expression, it looks that she was suffering from something or worrying soothing, which should not be the way for her age.
A very well composed picture to show the girl, the environment with shallow DoF. Good color contrast of the dress colors of the two kids. A nicely taken picture with clarity and details. Well done.

A very poignant photograph Jonathan. Technically perfect, but when I look at this and read your note, critiquing this picture seems so trivial. These kids live a hard life and there are thousands more like them all over Afghanistan. I was tempted to put this in my favourites, but it will only make me sad every time I look at it. David

Hello Jonathan,
I just browsed through your photos from Afghanistan - I'm deeply impressed, and touched at the same time. This particular photo, along with your note, is indeed very moving, it makes any comment on photographic technique insignificant. What you say about their living circumstances is more than just pityful.
We can only hope for a better future in this region ...
Thanks for sharing your remarkable work!
