Photographer’s Note
Bamian High School for boys is situated at the feet of the Buddha. While education is still looked upon as 'for boys only', girls' education still remains a dillema. Many girls never get the chance to study and of those who do 90 percent either get arrangedly married or are no more allowed to study.
At places where schools like these are by chance open and running, the number of boys studying is well beyond the capacity, the condition of the schools is in crisis, the qualification of the majority of the teachers is no more than class 5. And schools are more a matter of political agenda and propaganda by the Religious head, Warlords, tribal chiefs and the political leadership.
As you might see in the shot, schools walls are filled with posters of the electoral candidates.
Even after the Taliban, Now at the hands of the central government everything in this country seems to be in ruins... Alas!!!

Hi Hadi, I like this picture for the contrast between the new school and the ancient Buddha behind. The teachings of today are different from those from the Buddhist times. I remember walking past this building but it was being used for a political meeting at the time. I kept my head down and carried on past.
