Photographer’s Note
A pile of unexploded ordinance recently removed from a field in Afghanistan. The blue paint is used to make the object more visible and identify its lethality. This problem in Afghanistan will go on for many years.

Quite a simple, but powerful photo this. We hear the stories of people being maimed by mines, but don't often see the actual mines. I guess you were pretty close, did that worry you at all?

The irony is, in the US, blue paint is used to mark a weapon as being for training purposes only: mines, grenades, etc. Good shot.
