Silk Road travel:

we had left the Silk road proper long ago, now our way was to the Wakhan valley. The road south of Khorog, built for border patrols, still follows the Panj river upstream on the Tajik side.

The closeness of the Afghan side of the river again allows to observe a closed society. In the absence of roads and wheels Afghans must construct their connecting paths with a few handheld instruments. The men in the picture are discussing something briefly, but they were all extremely busy for much of the time. The picture is taken near Darmorakh.
