Photographer’s Note
Silk Road travel:
we had left the Silk road proper long ago, now our way was to the Wakhan valley. The road south of Khorog, built for border patrols, still follows the Panj river upstream on the Tajik side.
The closeness of the Afghan side of the river again allows to observe a closed society. In the absence of roads and wheels Afghans must construct their connecting paths with a few handheld instruments. The men in the picture are discussing something briefly, but they were all extremely busy for much of the time. The picture is taken near Darmorakh.

Hallo Dieter!
Was für eine Baustelle - offenbar auch nicht ganz ungefährlich! Für europäische Augen fast wieder einmal unglaublich! In Verbindung mit Deinem Kommentar wird das Foto noch eindrucksvoller. Die Diagonale der "Straße" im Bild wirkt irgendwie dynamisch. Wieder sehr interessant!

A classic use of diagonals! :-) Gives a great sense of the fragility of the road and the toughness of the people who have to use it.
I'm confused on one point, though: You list the country as Afghanistan, but in the title you say it's Turkmenistan. Which side of the border are you on?
