Photographer's Note
A malechite sunbird resting on a pincushion protea in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. No post-processing saturation - the bird and flowers really are those colours.
Kirstenbosch Gardens are frequently rated among the top botanical gardens in the world - very much helped by their location: on the slopes of Table Mountain - which gives some rather spectacular backdrops - and in the Cape Floral Kingdom, by far the smallest of the six floral kingdoms on our planet, covering a mere 0.04% of the land surface. While relatively tiny, in terms of biodiversity it is one of the world's hottest hot-spots, with around 9000 species of plant - around 6500 of which are endemic to the region.

Hello Iain,
It would be hard to beat this for a perfect combination of incredibly beautiful bird and lovely flowers. It's a well composed photo as well, and the blurred green background is nice.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Iain
A profusion of colour exploding from my screen and what a wonderful double delight!
The Protea blooms alone qualify yet as a setting for the shimmering exotic sunbird then together they are more than just two things together. A lovely colour harmony of a spectacular picture, Congrats.
Best wishes

Hello Iain,a real eye catcher! A beauty, lucky you to see this for real!
The bird and the fg flower are in perfect sharpness, with some good blurring in the rest of the shot.
One to be proud of.
Thanks for sharing, regards Jean.

Hi Iain
I would be chuffed to even see this bird never mind photographing it, and what a job you've done! The colours shimmer and the bird has such a noble and proud pose. You caught superb detail in both the bird and those amazing flowers. Really really cool photo.
Cheers

Hi Iain
When taking wildlife photos it's difficult to plan for the colour palette as it is usually the subject, not the photographer, that chooses the setting and the backdrop. Yet you achieved perfect combination of hues with eye-catching use of complementary colours so I imagine it must have been either great luck or commendable perseverance that made this image possible.
Have a nice weekend

Hello Iain,
Nice use of a shallow dof to isolate the attractive bird with the emerald green plumage from its oof bg. The red flowers compliment the bird. Fantastic sharpness and effective tight framing. Tfs!

Hello Iain, Wonderful picture. Not only Protea flower but also this tiny bird (colibri?). How strange that this guy didn't flew away. You were lucky to see it. I was in this botanial garden and I agree that it is one of the most beautiful. And different proteas are the main attraction. Thanks for sharing

Hello Iain,
What a fantastic photo of this charming little bird. The sharpness is truly amazing. I like the green colours a lot, they're so bright, they stand out easily and clearly against the green blurry background. The red flowers make a great colour contrast as well. Wonderful photo work!

Hello Iain,
This is a cracker of a shot, with the most attractive subjects, in the way of bird and flowers. The composition is excellent, the bird off-centre and having plenty of space into which it can gaze.
I like how you have used the shallow dof to keep the focus pin sharp on your main subjects, with a good b/g bokeh.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Dear Iain
This is an exquisite photo, truly beautiful and very artistic. I love your depth of field here and of course, your subject matter. The bird is so beautiful, surrounded by the Proteas, both of which have been superbly defined and saturated. The sheen on the bird's plumage is just flawless. A work you should be very proud of, my friend. Congratulations.
Warmest wishes
