Photographer's Note

Over 15 million children have lost a parent to AIDS. Of those, 12 million live in Africa. It is estimated that a child loses a parent to AIDS-related causes every 14 seconds.

The number of orphans in sub-Saharan Africa who have lost their parents to AIDS has increased from less than 1 million in 1990 to more than 12 million in 2005, and is expected to reach 25 million by 2010.

I photographed this little boy at a local orphanage. He is one of the few children to be truly blessed with genuine love and affection through the home yet most of the children there had been found abandoned in refuge bins or rescued from abuse under the care of surviving relatives...often sickly pensioners themselves.

It is his eyes that really tell the story.
