Kenya - Amboseli. On an early morning game drive to spot wildlife as the sun rose, I came across a comotion. The wildebeast were all running like mad - they were being chased by a hyena. The hyena was after the baby of the group - and after a chase that went on for a many minutes (we followed in our safari van) the wildebeast made a wrong move and the hyenas (another one had joined in) made the kill. It was such an interesting event to witness - it felt like something from a discovery channel documentary.

I think I've found a good use for the 'Decisive Moment' category here on TE - the hyena successfully outran the wildebeast and got to eat that morning.

*In the workshop - I've posted a version with the hyena in shot, hot on the tail of the wildebeast.

Wow!!! What an action shot, indeed a decisive moment if I've ever seen one. You've captured this excellently, the quality of this shot, in the low lighting and moving subjects is extraordinary.

One of the best photos I've seen from Africa involving animals.

Regards,
David

Very nice and moody picture. I like the line of trees in the background and those running animals in the mist. Excellent.
Regards
Kate

Hi David,
That's a famous spectacle. The gnous, the dust, the dust, and above all, action, all were at the RDV.
Cheers
Marc

Very good shots you have here. They both terrific and full of action. Because of the action shown I personally would have chosen the WS for main posting. I like the presence of the two animals showing the predatory part of life in the savannah. The colours in both cases are superb in spite of the difficult light.

Hi David
This is simpley beautiful and this call back to nature...milions of years of surviving.

Hi David
A marvellous decisive moment. Great action and sharp considering the movement. Were you hand holding the camera? My only suggestion would be to crop some off the bottom for a more panoramic look if you print this image. It also enhances the chase scene. Very well done.

I am so jealous right now :) I can't imagine how it must feel to actually see this!! I thank you for sharing both of these fantastic captures!! Looking at them really 'takes me away'.

Hi David,
A real drama is enacted by these group of animals on this natural stage with the morning sun starts swithing on its spotlight! Incredible snap with a nice colour tone.

Hello David,

Congratulations on a spectacular action shot. You've captured the wildebeast in full gallop, and the sad development of the hyena capturing a meal, is of course the unending story of the savanna. The glow from the low angle sunlight, the dust kicked up by the mad dash of the animals, the umbrella like trees in the background — all collaborate to produce a memorable photograph.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Hi david
great shot I saw you also have pictures of tanzania
did you enjoy your trip
good contrast colours composition and moment in your picture

Hi David,
Early morning, 1/1600 at f10.0...what iso were you one? Seems you shot at automatic because f10.0 was not really needed here. But forget the technical crap, it's the action what counts. Man this is what everyone want to see when he is on safari. Action, the hunt is on, wowwwwwwwww, i would like to photograph this...really good.

Hello David,

What a light and action you captured! Different colored bands and dust clouds are very attractive in your splendid photo. I checked your workshop post it can be also your primary post too. Excellent, congratulations.

Best Regards,

Ertugrul

Wonderful action shot. The early morning colours make a great backdrop for the action, complete with dust. It would be a difficult choice between this and the WS. We didn't get to see an actual kill. Well done
Kath

David,
Another great scene from the African safari. Good action shot. Not as sharp, but given the difficult light condition. You did well with great colors and composition and the overall impression of the landscape is very well captured and depicted. Thanks
Way

An amazing light, well captured in these layers...
Must have been a great moment.

Hi David,
You've captured this chase splendidly, it seems very beautiful that the wildebeests were running away in the early morning light.
Congratulations!
Hisashi

First this one, quite a unique moment but seeing your second WS, I think that one is even more apealing David, both can be tremendously improved still but the moment can't be improved.
I did a quick attempt on the second WS wich I prefer.
greetings
Henk

Hi David,
this pic is so good, its like watching a live movie, excellent POV ;color and composition.
Rishabh

hi david
certainly a discovery channel category shot. inspite of the dust, i like the clarity of the beast. good use of light as well. happy that one of those beast didnt came your direction...

Hello David
Very nice action captured here,
lot of dynamism and the beautiful sky in the background defientely adds to the photo. I am less entusiastic about the ground, there seems to be too much dead space in the ground which does not add much to the photo, maybe cropping it to achieve a panoramic look would improve the photo even more.

Daniel

Hi David,
A great in the action shot. And I love the layering in the shot...grass, animals and dust, trees, horizon and orange sky...all come together in this image. Well captured and I like your workshop version of the hyena working hard to get his meal.
Regards
Wanda

It is amazing how you get involved with nature. Amazing shot.
Saludos!

Hello David,
Great capture of this drama of nature!
The haze hovering over the ground enhances the beasts so well, and the moment is just right...
Great mood from the morning hunt, I agree this is the best image photo wise but personally I prefer WS with the hyena included since it tells the story without the words!
Greetings,
Pablo

Hi David,
Very beautiful composition. Excellent POV, colours and light. Excellent work!
