Photographer's Note
This small watchdog became furious when we tried to walk along the sugar cane. Fortunately, he was not that scary, rather amusing.
The picture is recorded in the Ribeira do Paul in the village of Passagem in the northwest of Santo Antao on Cabo Verde.
Ribeira do Paul is the most fertile land on the whole of Cabo Verde, because the high mountains capture most of the humidity of the trade winds. In Paul they grow mostly sugar cane, but also bananas, papaya, mango, frut a pao (bread fruit) and something called imyam (or similar). The sugar cane is used almost exclusively to make grogue, a kind of rum (and they like to drink it).

Hallo Franz Xaver,
Thomas
