To the east of Baía das Gatas, São Vicente Island, Cape Verde, there is a wild beach called Praia do Norte ("North Beach"). Nearby, on the base of Monte Verde, there is a poor, isolated village. Near the beach somebody built this naive monument, mostly of volcanic rock, like the island itself. I don't know more about it, but this arch recalls me an outstanding song of Tubarões called ♫ ♪ Porton d'Nós Ilha ("Gate of Our Island" or "Big Door of Our Island"), a poem of Renato Cardoso; that’s a wonderful morna (Cape-Verdean type of song).
In workshops there is the same arch from a different POV and a more general view for location, from the hill towards the sea, with the village of Baía das Gatas in background.

♫ ♪ Porton d'Nós Ilha ("Portão da Nossa Ilha", ou "das Nossas Ilhas") é um belo poema de Renato Cardoso, cantado pelos Tubarões. Não sei se há alguma relação entre essa bela morna e este arco na Praia do Norte, perto da Baía das Gatas, na ilha de São Vicente.

wow...a very special architecture in a very special place :)
The composition is great: I like the background, and the dark door to nowhere is a good contrast to it.

Ola amigo Francisco , que interessante arco em pedra vulcanica , numa zona deserta , gostei das montantanhas de fundo me fazem lembras as montanhas que vi na ilha do Sal , parabens!!!

This is what I love about Cape Verde. The old and forget parts of a not so distant past. I liked seeing both the workshops so that we can see the arch in several different views. I hope I can return and explore more of these beautiful islands someday. Keep the great photos coming :)

Excelente conjunto de fotos, Francisco. Todas juntas dão-nos uma ideia muito precisa do lugar. Adoro as 3 e não sei qual é mais bonita, mas acho que escolheste bem. Este tipo de paisagem despida atrai-me muito e a profundidade de campo com o arco em 1º plano é fantástica. Belas tonalidades de cor. Apetece-me ir por aí fora e sentir este vazio...Muito bom!

That IS a tough choice; I coiuldn't decide either. At first I thoought, "The sideways view couldn not be prettier than the lovely symmetry of the arch straight on," then I saw the glowing detail of the stonework and the way you framed the village in the arch!! Your third WS showing the sea goes a long ways towards showing why someone would love their village so much. HLJ, Pat

Bonjour Francisco,
Étant très intrigué par ce portique au milieu de nulle part, je suis allé voir les différentes vues présentées dans ton atelier et effectivement, ce portique semble sorti de nulle part et bien des questions restent sans réponses.
Très inusité comme prise de vue et admirablement bien choisi comme sujet inusité.

Olá Francisco,
Já abri este post uma série de vezes e por coincidência sempre foi em alturas em que não estava virado para escrever.
É um 'monumento' muito intrigante, mas de alguma forma integra-se muito bem na paisagem. É incrível como não cai, pois parece feito de pedras relativamente pequenas quase sem cimento.
Que raio de nome para um monte completamente árido! :D

Pois,tem razão este é o arco que podemos ver na minha foto,e aqui também podemos ver as plantinhas que eu tinha fotografado mais de perto.
Ficou bonita a sua foto.
Também não sei a razão pela qual este arco esta ali,e quanto ao nome da praia,eu sempre a conheci como a praia do norte de baia,agora eu não sei se esse é realmente o seu nome,ou se é chamada assim porque ao lado há a aldeia de Norte de Baia.
