Default To snunney: settings

hi Stephen

thanks as always for viewing my shots.

you asked me in my previous photo about the settings i use.
alot of it is trial and error, but there is a method to my madness.

the 2 photos are illuminated well, but thats not how they look in real life when i take the photo.

what i mean by that is, its naturally quite dark outside.
because of it being so dark, i purposely OVEREXPOSE the scene.
overexposing it, and using a long shutter speed like 15-30 seconds will give me lots and lots of illumination even though its dark outside.

and yes, a tripod is essential...its a must.

i will try various shutter speeds and F stops.
I will first try a 5 second exposure just as a trial and use it as my guide.
if i find the 5 sec exposure is way too dark, then i know i must go for at least 15 seconds..so then i'll try that.

its hard to find a spot to focus on too - because of the darkness. So i'll usually try to focus on a specific lightbulb on the bridge deck - to make sure the sensor is locking on to something specific. I think this was taken with an F7.1...thats about as low as i'll go for a dark shot like this one. I'll try 7.1,
F14, F22, F29....but also just for fun - and for trial/error purposes i'll try an F2.8 or F4...you never know until you try.

trial and error

thanks again
